Construction 20 A
55 cm x 75 cm
21.6 in x 29.5 in
Mixed media (graphite, watercolour paint and ink on paper)
"Construction 20 A + B" consists of two watercolour paintings of the same size. The two pieces were worked on at the same time, to maintain the same colours in both of them, and to make sure that the compositions would complement each other.
Colour always plays an important part in my work, and having worked with red and brown colour palettes for some time I found a need to explore warm and cold tones of grey in combination with a bright contrast colour; yellow.
Yellow is the brightest colour of the visible spectrum, and it is the most noticeable of all colors by the human eye. It means happiness and optimism and it is the colour of the sun, high energy, enthusiasm, hope, fun, and cheerfulness.
Black is associated with more negative traits such as fear, aggression and darkness, but black is required for all other colours to have depth and variation of hue and black is the absence of colour.
The diptych is composed by two "rooms" or areas; one the format of the artwork itself, the other the square shape within the format of the artwork. This represents the contained inner self and is described by the contrast between cold and warm tones of grey. The dark part / black has a clear sectioning off rom its surroundings while the bright yellow is actually seeping out of the contained area, suggesting a form of energy that can not be restrained. With use of diagonal lines going in distinct directions in parts "A" and "B", a sense of a coming together is created, as the two reflected images will create a stable V shape.
